EXPERIMENTAL INVESTIGATION ON THE EFFECT OF THE INTERNAL HEAT EXCHANGER AND INTERCOOLER EFFECTIVENESS ON THE ENERGY PERFORMANCE OF A TWO-STAGE TRANSCRITICAL CARBON DIOXIDE CYCLE

The coupled effect of the internal heat transfer between the compressor suction line and the gas-cooler outlet line and of the interstage cooling by means of an external fluid is experimentally investigated in a transcritical carbon dioxide refrigerating circuit with two-stage compression. The test rig is equipped with a semi-hermetic two-stage reciprocating compound compressor. A fixed evaporation pressure was considered. The gas-cooler outlet pressure was varied from 7.8 to 11 MPa. The experimental results are compared with available experimental data for the same system without internal heat exchange. The effects of the intercooler on the compressor efficiency is evaluated with reference to the energy performance of the cycle and through a thermographic analysis of the compressor head. The coupled effect of the suction line heat exchanger and intercooler is then analyzed in terms of exergy losses of the system.
