ALTERNATIVE THERMODYNAMIC CYCLES FOR A HIGH EFFICIENCY HEAT PUMP DRYER

The energy consumption of current domestic dryers is significant, and the interest for high efficiency technologies is growing in the global context of energy cost increase. Heat pump dryers, for domestic uses, permit 50% energy savings compared to current technologies. Operating conditions, at high temperature, present an interest for the use of refrigerant like water (R-718) or highly humid air. Steam mechanical compression (SMC) cycle, combined with a drying process using superheated steam as drying medium, is an open cycle where water vaporized from linen is the working fluid. A second technical solution for high energy efficiency dryer is studied: Brayton-Joule air cycle. Those two technical solutions are compared in terms of energy efficiency, drying intensity, and also technical constraints. A parameter study is proposed to evaluate the impact on the performance when the compressor efficiency and the heat exchanger area vary.
