COOLING AND FREEZING OF WATER DROPLET IN THE COLD AIR
Cooling and subsequently freezing of water droplets adhered to the conjunction of a thermocouple in the cold air is investigated through experiments and numerical simulations. In our experiments, microscope is used to observe the freezing of water droplet. it is found that the water droplet could keep unfrozen until its temperature attains -12℃. When the freezing is started, the water droplet losses transparent and becomes opaque due to numerous ice crystal embryos formation. Released heat of phase change raises and keeps the temperature of water droplet to that slightly lower than triple point of water until freezing finished. After Out surface frozen, Volume expansion induced by inside freezing causes the surface roughly and makes the droplet expend toward to the part with lower heat transfer coefficient. A model of the freezing process based on phase change dynamics is put forward and used in the numerical simulation. The results of numerical simulation are corresponding with the experimental results.
