ENTHALPY AND FREEZING POINTS DETERMINATION OF ICE SLURRIES BY EXCESS MODEL: APPLICATION TO THE WATER/ETHANOL PAIR
Since the fluids traditionally used in refrigeration industries contribute to increase the greenhouse effect, it is thus necessary to replace them and to develop new technologies. The use of ice slurries as secondary refrigerants is one of the most promising alternatives for cold distribution. In order to design cold distribution plants efficiently, it is essential to know how to predict the thermodynamic properties of the mixtures. It is especially vital in order to describe the relations that link temperature, ice fraction and enthalpy. Existing models are based on correlations with numerous parameters. The aim of this paper is to establish a consistent thermodynamic model that requires a minimum of parameters to allow one to represent the freezing point and the enthalpy of ice slurry. An NRTL model based on excess property is proposed in this paper. Comparison with the experimental values of a water ethanol binary mixture shows that the calculated values correspond accurately with experimental data.
