A STUDY ON CEILING RADIANT AIR CONDITIONING SYSTEM

Ceiling radiant air conditioning systems offer many superior features over conventional air conditioning systems, for instance, more energy saving, better environmental protection and thermal comfort. As an emerging technology, a ceiling radiant air conditioning system has a different operating mechanism and its performance is influenced by many different parameters. For this study computer simulations were carried out to investigate the ceiling cooling and heating performance with regard to the insulation influence, the filling material, the pipe span, and the fluid temperature. Three different ceiling structures were analyzed, with two cases of different locations of insulation layer and one case of without insulation. Two filling stuff employed were plaster and cement. Two pipe spans used were 200mm and 100mm. The simulations were carried using FLUENT software with both cooling duty and heating duty. The simulation results showed that cement filling can achieve higher heat transfer rate and smaller surface temperature variation than plaster filling. Insulation layer placed on the top of ceiling slab can achieve smaller surface temperature variation than placed on the top of the pipes. Without insulation the heat distribution between the top surface and the bottom surface was 2:3 for cement filling, but 9:11 for plaster filling. The simulation results were in good agreement with experimental results.
