APPROPRIATE INDOOR AIR CLIMATE FOR ENVIRONMENTALLY SUSTAINABLE SUPERMARKETS – FIELD MEASUREMENTS

Supermarkets are large users of energy, half of the electricity used is employed to display refrigerated food. Display cabinets are often located where local comfort can be poor due to interaction between the cold atmosphere in the cabinet and the ambient. An increased temperature and/or humidity will not only raise the energy requirement for cabinets but also for systems as heating and ventilation. Energy savings through energy efficient systems should not affect people or goods negatively. This paper presents air temperatures and enthalpy measured in front of vertical cabinets during summer and winter. Cold discomfort can be caused by unwanted cooling of one particular part of the body. The results indicate that customers especially during summer will be dissatisfied since the vertical air temperature differences show gradients (head-ankle) higher than 5K. This could be an even more serious problem for the staff, leading to uncomfortable or even unhealthy workingconditions (temperatures).
