Photoluminescence and Crystal Structure of Eu-doped Low Cristobalite
Blue light-emitting phosphors of the low (α)-cristobalite (SiO2) type structure have been developed. The chemical compositions of the prepared phosphor samples by solid state reaction method, are represented as (Na1-xKx)yAl2Si6 O16: 0.01Eu2O3(0. 1≤x≤0.9, 0. 1≤y≤2) and (Na0.66K0.34) Al2xSi6O16: 0.01Eu2O3(0.0≤x≤3.0). The acristobalite phase was formed as the major constituent over the most of the compositions range. The photoluminescence (PL) spectra of the a-cristobalite type phosphors show the broad excitation band of 200 -400 nm and the emission band of 360 -550 nm range with the maximum emission peak position of at 432 nm. The maximum emission and excitation wavelength of the PL spectra remained unchanged regardless of the sample composition variation in this study. The α-tobalite type phosphors show a very intense blue and the higher luminance than the CMS (CaMgSi2O6) as well as the orthoclasic feldspar type phosphor. The Eu+2-doped α-cristobalite is a new type of phosphor with SiO2 -framework structure. The phosphors consist of some glass phase as well as crystalline phases. The crystallinity and crystal structures are analyzed using the XRD data.
