The Viking Silk Road to the West
The focus of this conference is the Chinese Silk Road, but I am going to talk about another silk road, from Byzantium and Constantinople-the Viking Silk Road.I shall describe the archaeological evidence for long-distance trade connections stretching from Central Asia and Turkey, up the major river systems of Russia to the Baltic, and thence from Scandinavia to the British Isles.I shall show how techniques borrowed from mathematics and computing, using network analysis can be used to analyse Viking trade routes, and introduce the digital resources that can be used to study Viking trade.
