Effects of TiO2 On the sintering densification of UO2-Gd2O3burnable poison fuel

  TiO2-doped UO2-Gd2O3(8%by wt Gd2O3)burnable poison fuel was prepared using a co-precipitation reaction method.Doping of UO2-Gd2O3 with 0.05 wt%TiO2 significantly improves the sintered density,grain size,and bending strength of fuel pellets resulting from sintering at 1 600℃ under hydrogen for 4 hours.Additionally,homogeneous solid solutions were successfully formed without precipitation of Tio2 and/or Gd2O3.TiO2 doping in UO2-Gd2O3 fuel pellets accelerates their thermally activated material transport resulting in a decrease in onset temperature and the temperature of maximum densification rate.
