The design of fluorescence-based vapor detection platform on a smart phone
There is an apparently urgent demand for the high-speed,sensitive and hand-held detection of toxic gases and vapors. Here we demonstrate a cell phone-based hand-held platform toward sensitive and specific detection of different volatile organic compound(VOC)vapors. For this purpose,we designed a compact attachment, weighing < 60g,to the existing camera component of a smart-phone.There is an encapsulated chip consisting of a cross-responsive colorimetrical sensor array in thin layer chromatography pre-coated plate(TLC)substrate, which is inserted into the attachment from above and is illuminated by a light guide plate with ultra-violet(UV)light-emitting diodes(LEDs)at 365nm from back.Besides, the LEDs illuminate the sensor array and the micro gas pumps pump the tested vapor into the chip where the array dyes react with the vapor, which causes fluorescence intensity changes of array dyes captured by the cell-phone camera.Using principal component analysis algorithm(PCA)in a custom-developed Android application running on the same cell-phone,these images of the array can be digitally processed within several seconds to determine the type of vapors. This hand-held and cost-effective vapor detection platform can discriminate four VOC vapors like acetone, methanol etc.
