Perceiving Physical Attributes of Objects Using an Electrostatic Tactile Display
Based on the physical principle that the Coulomb force exerted on a finger affects the attractive and frictional force felt by the finger sliding through a surface,an electrostatic tactile display was developed and validated.The main structure of this display consisted of a Microsoft Surface,a Micro-touch screen,a tactile controlling module as well as a finger tracking module.The tactile controlling module generated the tactile stimuli signals and loads them to the Micro-touch screen,thus the related tactile sensation could be provided on the fingertip position.The electrostatic tactile display possesses two main features: 1) For static images,it can display detailed shapes,textures and softness of diverse objects,which improves the interaction between the realistic world and the virtual world; 2) For dynamic videos,it can present the real-time tactile information of video contents,which enhances the sense of immersion during the whole interaction process.Compared to the previous works,our display makes users perceive multiple tactile by generating different stimuli signals.Two typical applications for this display have been developed: 1) Virtual simulation applied in primary education.Referring to abstractive concepts,such as force,electromagnetic fields and thermal,which are invisible,imperceptible but objective,the virtual simulation software has been developed to enable students to perceive those abstractive concepts by touch.2) Braille recognition applied in auxiliary visually impaired people.Through touching the Braille displaying on the surface,the visually impaired people can obtain the text contents,which establishes an interaction bridge to the virtual world..
